What Is A Portable Milling Machine?

What exactly is a portable milling machine?  Is it as efficient and effective as a standard milling machine?  Is it affordable to the average user?  And, is it safe and easy to use?  These are some questions that you might have if you are in the process of adding a milling machine to your production inventory either at home or in your business.

First and foremost, a milling machine that is portable is extremely accurate and very versatile.  Because it is portable, it travels well and machining can be done using a particular axis.  Onsite machining is easy and can be done on either large or small rectangular areas.  All you have to do is clamp it on to any part that you want machined.  It works well in many difficult places and under any type of working condition.  The machine is easy to use and can be operated by even novice workers.

Use your portable machine for boring, drilling or milling projects.  Accurate and smooth travel is easily obtained.  The machine can face off either pitted or misaligned surfaces.  The resulting surface condition is restored. Forward and reverse processes are readily obtrained because the power feed is consistent and smooth.  These portable machines also offer special contact bearings that are angular in shape and result in more accurate cutting.  Industry standards are easily obtained through the speed of change utilized by the machine’s tooling mechanism.  Portable machines generally have a large tapered spindle that lets the machine take more for each cut.  These unique milling machines also offer leak proof seals and precise spindling that gives outstanding performance and reliability.

On a history note, the first portable milling machines were manufactured by a tool company in the late 19th century. This tool company was known as the Van Norman Machine Tool Company and it stayed in business until the 1980’s.  The most important milling machines produced by this company were “ram type” and featured a swivel-head design.  They could be changed from horizontal to vertical spindles very quickly.  A great advantage to these machines was that they came in various sizes ranging from a small home model to a large 9,000 pound industrial model.
