Operating A Horizontal Milling Machine

Safety is the first consideration when operating any type of machinery.  This is especially true when using a horizontal milling machine.  There are actually two types of milling machines – horizontal and vertical.  But with the horizontal type, you will be using overhead arm supports and cutters that are arbor driven.  This means that special precautions must be used to assure that safety is your first consideration. You want to avoid any injuries while you are using the machine and, at the same time, keep everything running smoothly and efficiently.

The cutting tool on any milling machine must always be sharp and free from debris.  This makes the tool less dangerous.  In addition, dull cutters cost much more because the cutting edges must work harder to get the job done.  If the cutting edge is dull, heat builds up and the cutter is likely to break as the edges become worn.  The final product is less desirable because poor quality surfaces will result.  You also will use more power to run your milling machine using a dull cutter.  Overall, your machine will not be efficient or safe for you to use.

When your milling machine is a horizontal version, make sure that you use a coarse tooth cutter rather than a fine tooth cutter.  This will keep your milling machine free of clogging material because chips will collect in the larger gullet areas of a coarse tooth cutter.  Also, the tooth layout on a coarse cutter will hold more chips using less heat.  Never use a fine tooth cutter for anything requiring deep grooving processes.

Keeping safety in mind is very important when setting up your horizontal milling machine.  You must always remember to leave the overhead arm support in place anytime you loosen or tighten the arbor hardware.  Use a suitable wrench when tightened the arbor nut and make sure it is the correct length.  This will help prevent cracking or stretching within the nut itself.  Do not unscrew the arbor nut completely and just tap lightly on it with a soft hammer.  This will loosen it safely from the spindle without causing any damage to the arbor.  By following simple safety precautions and using common sense, you will be able to enjoy hours of satisfying work at a reasonable cost.
